They pack in some incredible software for free. The software department is where Novation really killed it. Here’s a video of someone unboxing and going through the Launchkey MKII 49. Costs have to be cut, and I believe Novation chooses to cut in the build department, rather than other areas. Keep in mind, this keyboard is much cheaper than both of these keyboards. I still don’t think it competes with the durability as the Arturia Keylab MKII or the Akai MPK2 series, but it is an improvement for sure. The build overall feels much more durable. The brightly colored drum pads are great for playing live as they light up the room. The MIDI signal would also sometimes cut in and out due to the a cheap USB port on the back of the keyboard. The build was also pretty cheap feeling all around, especially in the faders and rotary knobs. It was weird because this would happen all on its own. They would start to change the MIDI channel, which is located at the top left of the keyboard. I had some serious problems with the faders on the original Launchkey. Before I purchased this, I owned the original Launchkey and there a couple of things that I was hoping that Novation would fix. The first thing that grabbed my attention would be the brightly colored drum pads. I also think that it defeats most of them, with a few exceptions that I will get into later in the review. In my opinion, it definitely stands up to the other keyboards around its price. Any ideas on what has caused this change in behavior and how to get either the Launchkey or Ableton to function like it was (perhaps a setting in Ableton)? This is quite frustrating as I found this track arming function of the buttons to be an essential feature for me (it’s how I select sounds to perform live). Then after a bit of a hiatus of not performing, I came back to the keyboard and these buttons are now sending out momentary MIDI messages rather than toggle messages, so pressing down a button arms a track, but releasing it instantly unarms the same track.

I had successfully mapped 8 of the 9 buttons to choose which of the first 8 tracks to record-arm (with track arm set to exclusive) and used this for a long time. Has anyone found a simple solution to this problem? I have the exact same situation as Dan posted, with the buttons below the faders in Launchkey 49 no longer able to arm tracks in Ableton Live. That said it might be possible to do this with M4L but nobody has chimed in when I raised the question. Dont know if it works on the free version though.

I believe they have a free and a paid version. The simplest solution (other than buying a more customizable controller) I heard is to use a 3rd party app like Bomes midi translator to translate the momentary to a toggle. So in other words, it is not that good of a controller for creating custom templates (from what I can tell). Track arm expect toggles.Ībleton kind of assumes the controller can change its control to a toggle.Ģnd problem is Launchkey while an almost perfectly natively supported controller (one of the best I've found), is not customizable like more higher end controllers. Certain Live GUI parameters are expecting a toggle.
